This web site will serve as an online portfolio, as well as an experiment in itself; I find the possibilities of web design exciting, though I am somewhat old-fashioned when it comes to actual image making. Of the few mediums I've used so far in my artistic career, oil paint is by far my favorite; I like the texture of it, the feel of it, the look and even, particularly, the smell of it. People, figures and portraits, as well as more illustrative works, tend to be my favorite subjects. I'd like to try my hand at professional portraiture at some point. I also enjoy doing landscapes and still lifes, and more conceptual works to illustrate various stories.
I have many heroes, and like to pay homage to them when I can. The two big ones who are specifically artsits are William Blake and Frida Kahlo, both visionary artists who used painting as a means to tell many varied stories. I've also been finding a lot of inspiration from writer H.P. Lovecraft. One of my favorite illustrators has always been Stephen Gammell, who has illustrated many children's books, most notably Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. I think of them, and the many others who inspire me, as my artistic ancestors and constantly look to them for advice and direction. My own form of ancestor worship.
As I said, I hope to turn this web site into an art experiment of it's own, and I intend to add to it as I create more works and learn more about how to manipulate the digital pallette...
Jim: You know I have an idea I've seen you before. I had that idea soon as you opened the door. It seemed almost like I was about to remember your name. But the name that I started to call you - wasn't a name! And so I stopped myself before I said it.
Laura: Wasn't it - Blue Roses?
Jim:: Blue Roses ! - My gosh, yes - Blue Roses! That's what I had on my tongue when you opened the door !
